The Royal Canadian Legion marked its 100th anniversary on July 17, with branches across Canada celebrating a century of service.
To celebrate the milestone, Bracebridge Branch 161 hosted an open house with current and former legion members, veterans, and community members. The event, held from 1 to 4 p.m., gave the public an opportunity to meet members and learn more about the legion over light food and refreshments.
Bracebridge Mayor Rick Maloney and Co-Chair and District E Commander for the Royal Canadian Legion Ontario Command Betty Smith were among those in attendance.
As part of the centennial celebrations, Smith said more than 1300 Legion branches across Canada, including those in Muskoka, will offer free 2026 memberships until December 31 in an effort to welcome more people into the organization.
Smith also said the Huntsville Legion Branch 232 plans to host its own 100th anniversary celebration this fall, with details to be announced when available.
