The Town of Huntsville is preparing for another round of winter weather as a storm is expected to move into the area.
According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, 20 to 40 mm of rain is expected across the region, along with prolonged periods of freezing rain, which could result in 5-10 mm of ice building up. The rain is expected to begin on the evening of March 10 and continue through to the evening of March 11.
Officials say precipitation may not freeze immediately, which could lead to localized flooding in low-lying areas. They also say the storm could cause power outages due to ice buildup on trees and power lines, along with strong wind gusts.
According to officials, the weather could make travel conditions hazardous. Residents are advised to use caution on roads and sidewalks and to allow space for municipal plows and emergency services to operate safely.
Public Works crews have been preparing equipment and say they are ready to respond to help keep streets and sidewalks as clear and safe as possible.
Residents are also encouraged to prepare for possible emergencies. The town recommends having an emergency plan in place for family members, including arrangements for alternative accommodations if homes are damaged or evacuation becomes necessary.
Officials also suggest building a 72-hour emergency kit with essentials such as food, water, medication, and pet supplies. Residents may also want to consider having access to a generator in case of extended power outages.
