On January 7, the Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department responded to two calls within five minutes of each other, requiring a coordinated response and underscoring the importance of following local burning regulations.
According to officials, at approximately 1:32 p.m., the department was dispatched to a reported structure fire. Upon arrival crews determined the call involved outdoor burning in violation of the municipal open-air burning by-law, and no structure was affected.
At approximately 1:37 p.m., the department was then dispatched to a confirmed structure fire at a residential property on East Waseosa Lake Road in Huntsville. Firefighters found two vehicles and a carport fully engulfed and flames spreading to the exterior of the home.
Firefighters from stations in Huntsville, Hillside, Baysville, and Port Sydney responded to the call with 38 firefighters and 10 apparatus. According to officials, crews acted quickly and were able to prevent the fire from spreading inside the residence, averting more extensive damage. There were no injuries reported.
Fire prevention officers are currently investigating the blaze. Officials say damage is estimated at $250,000, including the loss of two vehicles and the carport, as well as damage to the exterior of the home.
Officials say both incidents highlight the importance of complying with municipal burning by-laws and encourage residents to ensure all outdoor burning is conducted safely and responsibly.
