The Bracebridge OPP is warning the public about further fraud activity and newer tactics being used by scammers.
On Jan. 5, police received a report from a person who had fallen victim to a phone scam.
According to the OPP, the person received a call from someone they believed to be a representative from their banking institution.
Police said the victim reported the caller not only sounded knowledgeable, but also used “spoofing” technology to make the bank’s legitimate phone number appear on the victim’s caller ID.
Police said the scammer convinced the victim their account was compromised and claimed a courier would be sent to their home to retrieve the bank card.
Shortly after, an individual arrived at the victim’s residence, collected the card, and withdrew several thousand dollars from the account.
“Fraudsters put a great deal of effort into the tactics used to steal money from victims. In most situations, it involves the use of technology and the transfer of data or digital funds, and this recent report of a person showing up at the victim’s residence is a cause for additional concern,” said police.
To help residents stay safe, police recommend verifying all information through trusted sources, never sharing personal details with unknown callers, and securing online accounts with strong, unique passwords.
