Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare makes wearing masks a requirement in hospitals

Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare has reinstated mandatory masking requirements in both local hospitals due to the respiratory illness season.

Health officials said surgical masks are available at entrances to the hospitals and in various clinical areas.

According to health officials, masking changes follow a respiratory outbreak on the North Wing at the South Muskoka Memorial Hospital on Nov. 21.

Officials said the measure helps protect patients and staff, maintain safe hospital operations, and reduce the risk of becoming ill.

Hospital staff said enhanced cleaning practices are underway to limit the spread of infection, particularly during this season when cold and flu activity increases in the community.
