Georgian College offering new scholarship for students in its skilled trade programs

A partnership between Schulich Builders and Georgian College will see 10 “game-changing” scholarships offered to students enrolled in a skilled trade program this fall.

College officials explain five students enrolled in a one-year certificate program and five taking a two-year diploma will get $20,000 for each year of their program.

It will help cover tuition, tools, and living expenses.

The deadline to apply is May 31, 2024.

Georgian College has seven campuses, including one in Bracebridge.

Kevin Weaver, president and chief executive officer of Georgian, says this will only further Georgian as a provincial leader in skilled traded education.

“This scholarship program will have a far-reaching impact on students pursuing a career in the trades as well as our region for years to come,” he says. “This is an innovative and bold investment in the next generation of skilled trades professionals and the future of our economy.”

The Builders program is part of The Schulich Foundation. It offers scholarships annually to students pursuing a career in the skilled trades in hopes of combating the ongoing shortage the sector is dealing with.

Judy Schulich, director of the Foundation, says this will add to the 120 scholarships they award every year through the Builders program.

“We are proud to promote the skilled trades and support Georgian students pursuing this rewarding career path,” says Schulich. “Our challenge today is not having enough of these talented people to meet the demand.”
