Ontario’s police oversight body has charged a Bracebridge OPP officer with assault stemming from an incident this past summer in Georgian Bay.
Joseph Martino, Director of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), says while investigating a reported break-and-enter at the Canadian Pacific Railway on July 10th, police found a man believed to have been involved, and when they caught up to him near a retail area on Front Street, there was an “interaction” between the officer and suspect, according to the SIU report.
The man was arrested and transported to a hospital where he was diagnosed with serious injuries, according to Martino.
Cst. Scott Anthony has been charged with one count of assault causing bodily harm and one count of assault with a weapon.
He has a court date scheduled in Bracebridge on Dec. 20.
The SIU is an independent government agency that invokes its mandate when the conduct of an officer may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault, and/or the discharge of a firearm.
