Ontario’s police watchdog discontinues investigation into man’s arrest, injury in Bracebridge

Joseph Martino, Director of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), has ended the investigation looking into the injury a 30-year-old man suffered after a physical altercation with Bracebridge OPP officers in a holding cell.

He explains the man was arrested on June 21, 2022, after police responded to a reported assault involving his girlfriend. Martino says the man was treated for a “serious hand injury” he suffered prior to being arrested. He was placed in a holding cell at the Bracebridge OPP detachment after being released from the hospital.

Martino says the man was involved in a “physical altercation” with multiple officers while at the station and suffered a nose injury.

After going through the man’s medical records, Martino says he’s “not satisfied the man suffered a broken nose or any other serious injury within the terms of the SIU’s statutory mandate.”

The SIU is an independent government agency that polices the police. The organization’s mandate is invoked if officers have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault, and/or the discharge of a firearm.
