UPDATED One dead, one injured in Hwy 11 crash

UPDATED Feb. 3rd 4:00 p.m.: All lanes have since reopened.

One person is dead and another in the hospital with moderate injuries from a set of crashes on Highway 11.

The highway is closed in both directions near Cowbell Lane in Gravenhurst as police investigate.

Constable Samantha Bigley of the Bracebridge OPP says a transport truck collided with a tractor on Hwy 11 Northbound around 8:20 a.m., which caused a second crash between two cars on the southbound side.

Bigley says one person was pronounced dead at the northbound crash, and another was trapped in their car on the southbound.

According to Bigley, the trapped driver was freed by the Gravenhurst Fire Department and taken to the hospital with minor injuries, while others were treated for minor injuries by paramedics on scene.

Bigley says the highway should reopen by around 1:30 p.m., and thanks residents for their patience.

“In situations like this, it’s important that we do a thorough investigation,” says Bigley. “Although the detours can be time-consuming and the conditions are not fantastic, we just ask that people be patient.”
