Township of Lake of Bays seeks input to update its Dark Sky By-law

The Township of Lake of Bays is seeking public feedback on its Dark Sky By-law to identify potential updates.

The current Dark Sky By-law, which regulates outdoor illumination, was implemented in 2013 and has not been updated since.

According to officials, since its adoption, the bylaw has helped protect the region’s night skies by reducing unnecessary outdoor lighting and minimizing light pollution.

The township said that it has helped preserve local wildlife, enhance residents’ quality of life, improve nighttime visibility, and allow everyone to enjoy Lake of Bays’ night sky views.

Officials said that as part of the review process, the township is seeking public feedback to better understand how the current by-law is working, identify challenges and opportunities for improvement, and ensure it continues to meet the community’s needs.

Staff said the feedback gathered through the survey will be presented to council in fall 2026 as part of the Dark Sky By-law review.

The survey closes on Sept. 18. For more information or to complete the survey, click here.
