Lake of Bays calling on public input for tourism strategy

The Township of Lake of Bays is calling on residents to help shape the future of tourism.

The township has launched the first phase of public engagement for its five-year tourism strategy, which will guide how tourism is managed and supported across its four hamlets of Baysville, Dorset, Dwight, and Hillside.

Residents will have several opportunities to provide feedback throughout the process, including an online survey, a Community Connectors group, and a public town hall at the Lake of Bays Community Centre and Arena on August 20.

Feedback collected during the engagement process will be used to develop a draft strategy for township staff to review by the end of 2026. The final five-year Tourism Strategy is expected to be completed in early 2027.

The strategy follows several recent initiatives, including the introduction of a Municipal Accommodation Tax (MAT) in January 2026, which generates dedicated funding for tourism, and the creation of a new Destination Marketing Organization (DMO) to oversee how those funds are used. Officials say the Tourism Strategy will also align with the township’s Official Plan, creating a unified roadmap for sustainable tourism that benefits residents, businesses, and visitors.
