Jeff Watson has officially announced his candidacy to become the next mayor of Gravenhurst.
Watson, a business owner with more than 30 years of experience and a Gravenhurst resident for nearly 35 years, said he understands the issues residents want to see addressed.
Watson, who served two terms as deputy mayor from 2010 to 2018 and previously represented Ward 5 as councillor, brings years of political experience to the table.
If elected mayor, Watson said he will help build a strong council, address priorities and advocate for projects he knows Gravenhurst needs.
“One of them would be the operational aspects of infrastructure, which are roads, snow clearing, potholes, and looking after getting things completed,” he said.
He added that some of the key projects he plans to focus on include the Bay Street construction project and the Gravenhurst Health Hub.
Watson also said he plans to support environmental initiatives aimed at protecting the health of the lakes while continuing to support the town’s economy.
Additionally, he said he would like to continue expanding the Community Improvement Program to encourage development and redevelopment, while supporting ongoing downtown revitalization efforts.
As mayor, Watson said he will also prioritize the social aspect of the town, which includes housing and food insecurity.
“Now, I know people say that’s a district responsibility, but as mayor, I would be sitting on those committees, and I would push to ensure that we brought our fair share of social housing and helping the agencies that we already have,” he said.
Currently, Watson is one of three Mayoral candidates in Gravenhurst. Candidates have until Aug. 21 to file their nomination. The election is Oct. 26. For more information on local candidates, visit our website.
