District of Muskoka touts waste collection changes this summer

The District of Muskoka is reminding residents about the changes made to waste collection across the region.

According to District officials, clear bags are now mandatory for both curbside garbage collection and waste drop-off facilities. Each clear garbage bag may contain up to two privacy bags.

District staff said the initiative, which was introduced in March 2025, has helped keep recyclable and compostable materials out of the garbage.

Officials said with more than 50 per cent of household waste previously consisting of recyclable or compostable materials, this initiative supports better waste sorting and helps reduce pressure on the Rosewarne landfill.

The District said the change is part of the provincewide standardization of the Blue Box program, which the District joined in January.

The program shifts the financial and operational responsibility for recycling to the producers of packaging and paper products, with the goal of improving recycling rates across Ontario.

Additionally, the District has launched the Muskoka Waste app, which provides residents with collection reminders, waste-sorting guidance, and service updates.

Officials also said hard-copy collection calendars are once again available at local municipal offices, libraries, and transfer stations across Muskoka.
