Ironman 70.3 returns to Huntsville, several road closures in effect

Athletes from across Ontario and beyond will descend on Huntsville this weekend as the Ironman 70.3 race returns.

The event takes place July 5 at 7 a.m. from the Canada Summit Centre, with competitors taking on a challenging swim, bike, and run course through Huntsville and the surrounding area.

The race begins with a 1.2-mile, one-loop swim in Fairy Lake before athletes transition to a 56-mile cycling course that loops around Lake of Bays, passing through Dwight, Dorset, and Baysville. The event concludes with a 13.1-mile run through downtown Huntsville, turning around at Old Muskoka Road before finishing back at the Canada Summit Centre.

The Town of Huntsville is advising residents and visitors that several road closures and traffic restrictions will be in place throughout the day to ensure the safety of athletes and the public.

According to officials, Brunel Locks Bridge will be temporarily closed to vehicle traffic, while portions of Brunel Road will be restricted to local traffic only. Pedestrian and emergency vehicle access across the bridge will remain available. The OPP will be on site to direct traffic during the event.

Officials say additional road closures include Park Drive and Camp Kitchen Road.

Motorists should also expect delays along the bike route, with a share the road system in effect on Brunel Road from Park Drive south to Baysville and east along Highway 117, with the turnaround near Paint Lake.

Lane adjustments will be in place along the run course, affecting Brunel Road, Veterans Way, Lansdowne Street West, Lorne Street South, Main Street West, Aspdin Road, Old Ferguson Road, Madill Church Road, Old Muskoka Road, and Gun Club Road.

Parking restrictions will also be in effect throughout the day, including the main parking lot at the Canada Summit Centre and several streets throughout Huntsville.
