Muskoka fire danger rating to remain at moderate

The fire danger rating across Muskoka will remain moderate for Canada Day.

Steve Markham, public education and prevention officer with the Huntsville Fire Department, said there will be no change to the current fire danger rating, adding that recent light rainfall and high humidity are not expected to significantly affect conditions over the holiday.

“I just like to remind people that there’s no open-air burning between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., so you can have your campfire after 6 p.m., but you just want to make sure it’s attended, and you have some sort of water source nearby to be able to extinguish it,” he said.

The current fire danger rating allows small fires, including recreational and non-recreational burning, in most areas. However, daytime burning is not permitted.

Under a moderate rating, fireworks are permitted across most Muskoka municipalities, if allowed under local bylaws.
