With Bike Month coming up in June, The Town of Huntsville is kicking off the festivities with two family-friendly cycling events aimed at promoting healthy living in the community.
The Kids’ Bike Rodeo and Mayor’s Bike Ride will take place on May 28 at the Canada Summit Centre.
Organizers said the events are designed to encourage cyclists of all ages and skill levels to get active while learning more about road safety and the benefits of cycling.
The evening will kick off with the Kids’ Bike Rodeo from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Jack Bionda Arena Pad inside the Canada Summit Centre. The free event is open to children ages four to nine and will feature a series of bike challenges focused on braking, turning, and safe maneuvering. Advanced registration is required through the town’s website.
Later in the evening, Mayor Nancy Alcock will lead the Mayor’s Bike Ride alongside members of the Huntsville Mountain Bike Association, Tri-Muskoka Triathlon Club, and The SportLab. The ride departs from the front of the Canada Summit Centre, with participants gathering at 6:30 p.m. before the ride departs at 7 p.m. Riders of all ages are welcome, but those under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
The town is also continuing its Gear Up for Kids initiative in partnership with the Children’s Foundation of Muskoka. The program, launched by Mayor Alcock, aims to provide local youth with bicycles and safety gear through community sponsorships.
“Active transportation provides children with more than just a way to get around; it creates opportunities for exploration, independence, and lifelong healthy habits,” said Mayor Alcock. “Providing bikes and gear to local children helps remove barriers, empowers them to move freely, and contributes to building a stronger, more connected community for the future.”
