The District of Muskoka has launched a new environmentally friendly program and is selling rain barrels to residents to collect rainwater for later use.
According to Lauren Saville, community climate initiatives coordinator with the district, the initiative is part of the Community Energy and Emissions Reduction Plan, which aims to promote water-saving appliances and systems such as rain gardens, rain barrels, drip irrigation, and on-demand water heaters.
“Rain barrels are super great for the environment and also for residents to save money, especially for residents who are on safe town water, who pay for their water bills versus residents that are on a septic or sewer or on a well,” she said. “It can really reduce water use, especially throughout the spring and summer.”
She also said that having a rain barrel can promote healthier plants by using natural rainwater, reduce runoff that can impact local waterways, and help conserve water during the drier months.
The District Municipality of Muskoka is offering residents two ways to acquire a rain barrel this spring. Homeowners can choose home delivery for a $10 fee, which directly benefits the District, or opt for free pickup at the Muskoka Lumber Community Centre parking lot in Bracebridge on June 16 between 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
Saville said the funds collected through the program will help support furthering their environmental initiatives and programs they want to implement.
