The District of Muskoka is beginning site preparation work today (May 11) to continue the transformation of Bay Street in Gravenhurst.
According to district officials, crews are expected to begin mobilizing between Sarah Street and the Canada Post office as early as this week.
Officials say once site preparations are complete, major construction and the full closure of Bay Street from Sarah Street to Muskoka Road South are slated to get underway in June.
The multi-year project, which began in 2024 and spans approximately 1.9 kilometres, includes replacing underground pipes dating back to 1944 to help ensure reliable access to clean drinking water, as well as upgrading wastewater and stormwater management systems.
It also aims to improve the road structure, enhance pedestrian safety, and create more opportunities for active transportation.
The District says drivers should expect some traffic impacts as work will require occasional intersection closures.
In May, officials say crews will install temporary water services to reduce disruption during construction, followed by a full closure of Bay Street from Sarah Street to Muskoka Road South in June to allow underground work to be completed safely and efficiently.
The Town of Gravenhurst says businesses will remain open and accessible throughout the work, with signage in place to help ensure easy access to shops and services.
Officials say the work is expected to continue through the remainder of the year, with the road reopening planned for the end of December 2026.
While delays may occur due to unforeseen conditions, notices will be provided whenever possible.
