The Town of Gravenhurst is moving forward with a $3.78 million project to improve drainage on Musquash Road.
During an April 21 meeting, council awarded the project to HLD Muskoka after reviewing eight submissions.
According to a report presented to council, the project includes the installation of a climate-resilient storm system that safeguards residential areas from persistent flooding.
Town staff said the project represents the largest single investment in capital infrastructure since the construction of the Centennial Centre.
Due to the scale of the work, officials said the project will be completed in two phases, with construction spanning a two-year window.
The first phase is scheduled to begin in early June, with a target completion date of late October. The second phase, expected to wrap up by October 2027, will not be permitted to start until the initial phase is substantially complete.
According to staff, to achieve the design as tendered, tree removals, earth and rock excavation, watermain realignment, storm sewers installation and road rehabilitation will be necessary.
Town staff said ongoing lane closures will be necessary for underground work. However, local traffic and garbage collection will be maintained throughout all phases of construction.
The project cost exceeds the previously allocated capital budget, but according to the staff, sufficient funds are available to proceed with the construction of the first phase.
The second phase reflects an approximate shortfall of $600K, but staff said administration will focus on identifying cost-saving opportunities to help offset the increase, including potential 2027 capital budget adjustments.
