OPP to re-align policing responsibilities within Algonquin Park

The Ontario Provincial Police is realigning areas of responsibility for policing in Algonquin Park.

According to the OPP, the decision follows an evaluation of its operations, which identified efficiencies in support of public safety.

As a result of the evaluation, Huntsville OPP will provide policing services in Algonquin Park west of mile marker 34, including the Lake of Two Rivers Café and Grill. While the Bancroft and Whitney OPP detachments will be amalgamated and will be responsible for policing the remaining eastern portion of the park.

According to the OPP, the northern area of Algonquin Park will be served by the Upper Ottawa Valley, North Bay, and Almaguin Highlands detachments, with regional assistance and resources as needed.

“This change enables the OPP to have increased police presence on Highway 60 through Algonquin Park and for the surrounding communities. It also increases our ability to share resources such as specialists,” states a release on the changes. “Members reporting locations will remain unchanged, although some internal realignment will occur as detachment boundaries are adjusted.”
