The Bracebridge Public School Terry Fox Run takes place tomorrow (Oct. 2), and one local student is once again doing her part to help raise money for cancer research.
Eleven-year-old Peyton Sewell is taking part in the fundraiser for the fourth year in a row, and she’s calling on the community for help.
Sewell’s first two years of fundraising, she raised over $3500 each year. Last year, she raised $10,350 and is hoping to surpass that amount this year.
Her mother, Pansy Sewell, says the cause has always been extremely important to Peyton, and her determination continues to grow each year.
“She’s always loved Terry Fox, it’s been a major part of her life,” Sewell said. “She keeps saying to me, ‘Mom, we have to do more and more every year, Terry Fox would never give up, we have to continue for him.'”
Sewell said Peyton has sought donations from friends, family, and community members, and further showed her dedication by collecting donations outside of Your Independent Grocer and even contributing some of her own money.
Sewell said she hopes her daughter’s efforts will help inspire her classmates and other community members to get involved.
“It’s a community effort, it’s not just an effort on Peyton,” she said. “It takes the whole community.”
As of Oct. 1, $6780 has been raised for Sewell’s class. Donations can still be made after tomorrow’s run.
