Emergency Preparedness Week is being recognized across Muskoka from May 3 to 9.
The initiative is a national awareness campaign that encourages residents to take action to ensure they are prepared to protect themselves, their families and their community during an emergency.
This year, the provincial theme is Prepared Together.
With Muskoka prone to severe weather and power outages, officials said a good way for residents to be prepared is to learn the specific risks facing the community.
Officials said being ready means knowing how to handle common outages as well as rarer emergency scenarios.
According to officials, having a plan can help residents know what to do when an emergency occurs, and they encourage people to practice it regularly with everyone in the household.
Officials also said residents should prepare and regularly update their emergency kits, ensuring they have basic supplies like batteries, essential medications, snacks and water to support themselves and their families for an extended period.
Additionally, officials encouraged people to download the Voyent Alert app, which provides location-based notifications to family members and delivers emergency alerts via home phone, cell phone and/or email when an incident occurs.
As part of the initiative, Town of Bracebridge officials said they will issue a Voyent Alert update to all users in the area, and those who correctly identify the instructions included in the alert will have a chance to win an emergency preparedness kit.
