Water levels continue to rise across Trent-Severn waterway

Water levels and river flow across the Trent-Severn waterway continue to rise following an extended period of heavy precipitation and rapid snowmelt.

According to Parks Canada’s water management team, the region received approximately 75 per cent more precipitation than normal in March. That trend continued into April, with roughly 100 millimetres of rainfall recorded in the first two weeks of the month, well above seasonal averages.

Combined with ongoing snowmelt and sudden warm temperatures, the excess moisture is pushing water levels higher throughout the system, and officials say flows and levels are expected to keep increasing.

Northern parts of the waterway, including sections of the Gull River system, still have snow on the ground, contributing to increased runoff. Officials say water levels in both the Gull River and Burnt River systems are already above normal and continuing to rise. Central lakes throughout the watershed are also reporting above-average levels.

The Trent-Severn Water Management team is actively monitoring conditions across the waterway, with updates to be issued through local conservation authorities and the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources as needed.

With more precipitation and warm temperatures expected, residents are urged to stay informed and take precautions as high water conditions continue across the region.
