The Huntsville Salvation Army collected 34,000 lbs. of nonperishable food during its 37th annual Project Porchlight on Dec. 3
Major Brandi LeDrew, Corps and Community Services Officer with the Salvation Army, said this amount of food will help sustain their food bank operations for the next six months.
According to LeDrew the total food amount collected this year was slightly lower than last year’s. She said they understand, given the inconvenient weather and poor road conditions on the evening of the event.
“We also understand that times are hard for a lot of people, making the amount of people that are able to donate a bit less,” said LeDrew.
LeDrew said the effort is a major undertaking because, after collection, the food must be sorted by product type and checked for best-before dates.
“Now that all this food is sorted and stored, we will be able to get it into the hands of those families who require extra help to make it through the month,” said LeDrew.
She thanked the volunteers and the Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department, and added their efforts to make this event a success year after year.
“Your partnership with us is long standing, and we appreciate every single year that you give of yourselves to help others,” she said.
