Community rallying around Huntsville family of five displaced by house fire

A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support a family displaced by a fire that destroyed two multi-residential buildings on West Street South on October 1.

“[Jason and Wendy Martin’s] house was irreparably damaged by a fire,” states the GoFundMe initiative organized by Sarah Spring. “This was the family home where they raised their three children, Sam, Sydnei and Iris.”

Forty firefighters from stations in Huntsville, Hillside, and Port Sydney responded to the blaze around 10 a.m. Upon arrival, crews found heavy fire conditions on the side and porch of the residence, with smoke filling both levels of the home.

The fire took over eight hours to fully extinguish, resulting in the complete destruction of both a triplex and a duplex. The exact cause of the fire remains undetermined.

The home was built through Habitat for Humanity, a nationwide non-profit organization dedicated to creating accessible and affordable homeownership opportunities for families.

Kimberley Woodcock, chief executive officer of Habitat for Humanity Ontario Gateway North, said they are in direct contact with both families and ensuring they have the support they need.

“We can confirm that the families are insured and that recovery processes are underway, which will help them begin rebuilding their lives,” said Woodcock.

According to GoFundMe, Wendy has been a Yoga instructor in Huntsville for the past 25 years.

“She has provided a safe space to stretch and grow for countless people in the community,” shares the initiative. “Additionally, she and Jay have graced the area for years, adding colour and vibrancy to the community with their business, Muskoka Tye Dye.”

According to Spring, the Martin’s lost a lot of their merchandise in the fire and are now facing the trauma of “suddenly becoming homeless overnight.”

“Jay and Wendy are facing months of healing and loss. Let’s come together and help shoulder their load,” states the initiative.

As of Oct. 3, the GoFundMe campaign has raised over $27,800.
