The fire danger rating has been lowered from high to moderate across all of Muskoka, according to the Muskoka Association of Fire Chiefs.
In most jurisdictions, this means small recreational open-air fires are permitted between the hours of 6 p.m. and 8 a.m.. However, daytime burning is not allowed.
Officials ask those who have open-air fires to practice caution when burning by following some guidelines.
- Keep the fire at least 20 feet away from any adjacent properties, structures, trees or anything that may burn that is a maximum of two feet wide.
- Do not leave the fire unattended.
- Do not use aerosols or accelerants such as gasoline on fires; these substances can be unpredictable and may explode.
- Only dry wood is allowed to be burned. No grass, yard waste or green wood.
- Must have a quickly accessible supply of water and tools to extinguish a fire – the fire must be completely out before leaving it.
- Keep a safe distance, especially for children and pets.
- If there is an emergency dial 9-1-1.
