A Huntsville man charged with kidnapping is in court today. Twenty-seven-year-old John Merkel was arrested in August after holding someone against their will for 24 hours. Merkel allegedly assaulted the victim and forced him to take money out from his local bank account. His formal charges include forcible confinement, assault, threatening death and possession of a controlled substance. The local paper reports Scott Purves and Ashley McLeod were the two other people arrested in the investigation. Bracebridge Court says Purves is set to appear in court Jan. 20, while McLeod will be in court on Mar. 16 for trial.  Details of what happened during the kidnapping or the name of the victim have not been released because of a publication ban.
