OPP warns about ice on lakes and rivers

If you’re thinking of heading out onto the ice on lakes and rivers in the area, the OPP have a few precautions for you. They’re saying temperatures and ice conditions are changing quickly so make sure to check the ice in different spots before you head out. They also say you should be wearing a flotation suit, and if you’re alone, be prepared to rescue yourself. If you’re in a group, you should be leaving plenty of space between people so if one person does fall through, no one else will. The OPP is also saying you need at least four inches of new, clear hard ice if you’re walking or ice fishing. For snowmobiling or ATVing, you need at least five inches of new, hard ice for one person. And if you’re in one vehicle or a small pickup truck, there needs to be at least 8-12 inches of clear, hard new ice.
