COTTAGE COUNTRY, ON – With lock stations set to close after the long weekend, Parks Canada is warning people that using the waterways will be at their own risk.
As of October 14th, Trent-Severn Waterway’s 44 stations between Trenton and Port Severn will shutdown before reopening in May.
Parks Canada asked the public to use caution in and around the waterway structures and channels over the winter months. It added that unmarked hazards could exist including wet leaves, ice, and snow on stairs and walkways, and ice conditions on the waterway can vary.
Aids to navigation may be missing, off-station, or inoperable until next spring for any boaters using the water.
The drawdown forecast has water levels decreasing throughout the Haliburton Lakes according to the Trent-Severn Waterway Water Management website.
Water management practices, updates, frequently asked questions, various reports, and the most recent water levels of lakes along the Trent-Severn Waterway can also be found online.
Stakeholders are advised to continue referring to their local Conservation Authority or the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry as the primary source for relevant flood forecasting information.
