OPP stats in from labour day weekend blitz

ORILLIA, ON – The statistics for the labour day weekend are in from the OPP and it does not make for good reading.

The provincial police agency reports there were a total of nine people killed over the holiday weekend.  Seven were traffic-related from six different collisions, while two came as the result of an off-road vehicle incident.

One of the victims riding an ATV was not wearing a helmet. Police were pleased to report there were no marine-related fatalities compared to two a year ago on the same weekend.

In total, the OPP laid 263 distracted driving charges during its weekend campaign. Just over 8,000 charges were given out across the province. 5,021 of those were for speeding, including 174 for racing/stunt driving.

Police remind motorists the new fines for distracted driving include an increased fine of up to $1,000, three demerit points and a possible three-day suspension of your license.
