Bracebridge OPP reminding drivers to be vigilant with back-to-school traffic

BRACEBRIDGE, ON- Police in Bracebridge are asking motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians to keep an eye out when travelling around town with the start of the new school year.

“Motorists should be aware that there is often a reduced speed limit and increased penalty for not adhering to the speed limit in school zones,” read the announcement from the detachment.

“Respecting school buses, when the flashing lights are activated and the stop arm is out, motorists are required to stop in both directions, with the exception of divided highways, and wait for the area to be clear and the school bus to continue.”

The detachment also said cyclists should be respected as vehicles on the road, and riders are entitled to a share of the route.

“Cyclists are, however, also expected to follow the rules of the road and that includes at traffic signals, stop signs and pedestrian crossovers and signalling their intentions when changing lanes or direction,” read the detachment’s announcement.

“Pedestrians are assisted at several busy intersections by crossing guards at pedestrian crossovers and crosswalks and motorists are reminded that they may not proceed until the pedestrian has crossed the entire way at those designated places.”
