Huntsville OPP asking for help in tracking radio tower break-in suspects

HUNTSVILLE, ON- The police need tips to find out who damaged the transmission equipment for Hunter’s Bay Radio.

The station said they were taken off the air briefly on Thursday because of a fire at their transmission site.

They reported that their transmitter facility in Dwight was set on fire.

“Vandals broke into the secured facility and poured an accelerant on equipment and lit it on fire,” a story on the station’s website reported.

The story goes on to say, “While the fire did not affect our equipment, smoke and soot caused damage to several components of the transmitter which failed overnight.”

Technicians were able to restore the signal to about a quarter of its normal power.

Canadian Microwave and Hunters Bay Radio are offering a $1000 reward for any information that leads to an arrest in this case.

Police are now asking help in finding the suspect or suspects involved in the incident.

They say that between August 7th and August 9th, unlawful entry was made to a cabin at the base of the telecommunication tower located north of Highway 60 on Miller Hill Road in Lake of Bays.

The Huntsville detachment indicated that the damage to the equipment is part of the investigation into the break in, but a firm date on when the fire occurred has not yet been determined.

Hunter’s Bay Radio indicated that the fire occurred between the 7th and 9th.
