News Port Sydney looking for the 2019 ‘grouch’ SHARE ON: Phil McCabe, staff Monday Aug. 12th, 2019 One of the Port Sydney signs (photo taken from makemycontest.com) PORT SYDNEY, ON – Port Sydney is looking for more grouchs. The local chamber of commerce is trying to raise funds to repair the community’s well-known signs by finding the community’s one “old grouch”. Those signs read “Welcome to Port Sydney ‘Home of 800 nice families and 1 Old Grouch”. The MyMuskokanow.com newsroom spoke with Derek Watson-Brown about the chamber’s fundraising campaign, which is aimed at putting together a calendar of grouches. Watson-Brown said the signs are in disrepair. Adding to that, he says they mean a lot to the community so that is why the chamber is trying to get them replaced. That is where the contest comes in. People enter by sending their grouch face photo in, which costs $10 an entry. After that is just a matter of getting people to donate to the cause while voting for the photo they like the most. In order to enter the contest, you’ll need to be a permanent or seasonal resident of Port Sydney. Other things to consider while submitting your photo is to make sure that the resolution is high enough that the photo does not get distorted if your photo is added to the calendar, and anyone under 18 needs to have a consent form filled out by their parent or guardian. Whoever enters will need to be able to attend the PSU Grouch Awards Ceremony on August 24th. According to the chamber, the winner will be chosen based on whoever raises the most donations. The grouchiest fundraiser gets their photo added to the calendar on the month of their choosing, as well as a seat of honour and complimentary meal 67th Annual Turkey Dinner. The winner also gets a gift pack and a giving tree leaf will be donated in their honour. Aside from the winner, the 11 best runner ups will get featured in the calendar as well. Watson-Brown says that there is no timeline for repairing the signs just yet, saying that right now they are just trying to raise the funds.
