OSPCA promoting animal care heading into the long weekend

STOUFFVILLE, ON – With the long weekend here, keep an eye on your furry friends.

That’s the word from the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society, who are offering tips and suggestions to keep people’s best friend safe and happy during long weekend adventures.

If you are going on a road trip, OSPCA says the pet should be confined to the back seat, either in a crate or a pet seatbelt. As well, the animal protection agency says your pet should never travel in the trunk or the bed of a truck.

Another pair of suggestions for transporting dogs is to try to keep the car at a comfortable temperature and feed them at least four hours before the trip so they don’t run the risk of car sickness.

It is also a good idea to schedule rest stops every two to four hours and also attach their leash before taking them out of the car.

Never leave your pet in the car, as parked cars run the risk of getting dangerously hot quickly.

Once you have gotten where you are going, the OSPCA says that if you are getting on a boat your pet should be given a pet life jacket. OSPCA says that not only do life jackets keep them afloat, it also makes it easier to pull them back on board.

Much like a car, a boat can get very hot if parked in the sun after a short time. With that in mind, OSPCA suggests that you create a shaded area for your pet to use.

Whether you are camping or cottaging, to stop your dog from getting hurt or lost, owners are encouraged to stop them from wandering. As well, they should be leashed or tied off.

Before heading to the cottage, OSPCA says it’s good to make sure your companion has identification with the address and phone number of where you are staying. If your pet is microchipped, contact the chip company and tell them where you are going.

The last thing that the OSPCA offers to pet owners is the suggestion to simply enjoy the long weekend.
