Listeria contamination causes recall for Eat Smart kale salad

OTTAWA, ON- A recall has been put in place for Fresh Taste Produce’s kale salad kits.

According to a notice from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), the company’s Eat Smart Sweet Kale Vegetable Salad Bag Kits have been withdrawn from the marketplace due to possible listeria contamination.

Consumers should not eat the Sweet Kale Vegetable Salad Bag Kit that holds 794 grams, with an expiry date of July 17, 2019. The product was available in New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island, and Quebec.

If anyone becomes sick from consuming a recalled product, they should call their doctor. They should also check if they have recalled products in their home, which should be thrown out or returned to the store where they were purchased.

“Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick,” read the notice from the CFIA.

“Symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness. Pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Although infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, the infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn or even stillbirth. In severe cases of illness, people may die.”
