37-year-old Sudbury police officer dead after collision between fuel tanker and pickup truck

UPDATE: The driver who passed away has been confirmed to have been an officer with the Greater Sudbury Police. The service will not be releasing the name of the driver at the request of their family.

PARRY SOUND, ON- One person is dead and another is in hospital after a crash on Highway 69.

According to the West Parry Sound OPP, members responded to the crash at Highway 69 in Mowat Township, six kilometres south of the French River around 12:39 p.m.

The Britt fire department and paramedics from Sudbury Emergency Medical Services also responded to the scene.

The vehicles involved were a pickup truck and a fuel tanker truck.

The 37 year-old driver of the southbound pickup truck, from Sudbury, was pronounced dead at the scene.  The 59 year-old driver of the northbound fuel tanker truck, from Rayside-Balfour, was transported to hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

A post-mortem examination is expected to occur today.

Further information will be released as it becomes available.

The highway had been closed for ten hours in both directions while officers investigated what took place.
