‘Beat the heat’ with these tips to stay cool: Health Unit

HALIBURTON, ON – Temperatures are forecasted to stay in the mid-30s today, so the health unit wants to help people cool off.

Three weeks ago, the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit released an information package offering tips to ‘Beat the Heat’ which applies to days like today.

Although the temperatures are not expected to exceed 30 with the humidex making it feel like mid-30s, The health unit suggests that prolonged exposure to that heat, humidity and UV index could have adverse effects on humans and pets.

“Heat-related illnesses can take a toll on many people, especially infants, older adults and people with chronic conditions,” says Melissa Johnstone, Emergency Management Coordinator with the Health Unit.

Offering ways to stay cool, the health unit suggests that wherever possible people avoid going out in the sun, stay in or go to somewhere with air-conditioning, stay in the shade as much as possible and drink lots of water.

Some of the other suggestions include wear loose-fitting, light clothing and a wide-brimmed hat, drink lots of water, check on vulnerable family members, avoid eating heavy meals that require using the stove and take a cool shower or bath periodically to lower your internal body temperature.

In terms of keeping your house cooler, it is recommended that you leave the blinds or drapes closed, leave the lights off or on low.

Some municipalities offer cooling centres, HKPR suggests checking with your local municipality to see if there is one near you.
