National security now available at Muskoka Airport

With new flights coming from Toronto through Porter Airlines’ expanded service to the area, security is now available at the Muskoka Airport.

The Minister of Transport, Marc Garneau announced the Gravenhurst based airport will be able to purchase security screening services from the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA). This type of service could help the airport attract new business and expand its service offerings.

The Transportation Modernization Act amended the CATSA act allowing non-designated airports to apply for purchasing security screening services.

Muskoka Airport is the first regional airport to obtain designation under this new process.

Anyone flying on a Porter flight will now be screened at Muskoka Airport and when they land at Billy Bishop Airport, would still be considered in a secure zone and able to take further connecting flights to Canada and the USA.

“Through the Transportation Modernization Act, we are making the Canadian air industry more competitive. Giving small, low-risk airports the ability to purchase CATSA screening services will create opportunities for them to attract new commercial routes to stimulate growth in the air sector,” said Garneau.

Regularly scheduled service to and from Toronto to Muskoka begins with a first flight arriving this afternoon in Gravenhurst.
