Those who don’t follow burning rules in Gravenhurst could get fined

GRAVENHURST, ON – Officials with the town of Gravenhurst are reminding residents and visitors about burning regulations.

Daytime fires are not allowed, however, supervised and contained fires are from two hours before sunset to two hours after sunrise in the municipality.

There are no fires permitted in Wards 1 and 5, which is the downtown core and the area just north of it.

The municipality asked people to consider the following factors before creating a fire.

•         Only class A combustibles are permitted to burn,

•         Fires must be 15 metres from all structures and vehicles,

•         Fires must be 5 metres from any forest area,

•         Fires cannot exceed 2 by 2 metres in size,

•         Fires are not permitted in windy conditions and smoke cannot impair motorists or other residents

•         Fires must be attended at all times with a water supply readily available

•         Zero tolerance for burning during a declared fire ban

Anyone caught breaking the rules will be fined at least $200 to $350, along with other emergency service fines. Gravenhurst officials said the by-law is enforced on a complaint-driven basis.
