OPP urging motorists to drive safe during winter

Police continue to urge motorists to drive safer in winter road conditions. On Thursday, Bracebridge OPP responded to 32 motor vehicle collisions over the course of the day. Highway 400 south was closed at South Gibson Lake road for a portion of the afternoon and Highway 11 South near Beiers road was also closed for several hours in the evening. Police say poor driving behaviour – not poor weather or road conditions – was a primary contributing factor in many of these collisions. They say drivers need to adjust their speed and slow right down when visibility and road conditions deteriorate and to avoid non-essential travel during these periods.

Drivers should also use their full set of headlights every day throughout the winter months. Using the full set is the only way to completely engage your rear lights and this is critical in helping to reduce the risk of collisions when driving in poor visibility.
