School board issues layoff notices to at least 67 support staff

LINDSAY, ON- At least 67 school support staff in the Trillium Lakelands District School Board have gotten layoff notices.

Announced in a letter sent by CUPE 997, layoffs will impact 50 educational assistants across the board, eight office employees, and eight or nine custodial staff.

Although the custodial staff was included, CUPE says they have yet to get their layoff notices.

The educational assistant layoffs include seven itinerant educational assistants, who are part of the Behaviour Intervention Response Team (BIRT), as well as seven Student Success Educational Assistants at the secondary school level.

The eight office workers include members working in payroll, accounting, human resources, two secondary school secretaries and three adult education centre secretaries.

The eight or nine custodial staff will come from both elementary and secondary schools.

The union says that the laid-off members should contact their MPP, whether that be Laurie Scott or Norm Miller to raise concerns over the layoffs of front line employees, despite Premier Doug Ford saying no front line workers will lose their job.

“Clearly at Trillium Lakelands that is not the case,” said William Campbell, CUPE 997 president, in the letter.

“These are front line workers, all working to support a better school experience for the students of TLDSB.”

As of today, it is just support staff that have received notices.
