Fire destroys cottage in Wahta Mohawk Territory

BALA, ON – A fire in the Wahta Mohawk Territory has destroyed a cottage.

Three stations from the Township of Muskoka Lakes Fire Department responded to the report of a fire around 1:30pm yesterday at 1212 Wahta Road #2.

When crews arrived a cottage was fully engulfed in flames. Portable pumps and pumpers got water to the scene quickly and stopped the fire as it began to spread to the nearby forest and neighbouring cottages.

Fire Prevention Officer Douglas Holland credits neighbours with portable water pumps also helping to contain the blaze. The main cottage and a bunkie were destroyed by the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but believed not to be suspicious. No injuries were reported and the value of the loss is around $200,000.
