Muskoka Lakes offering residents free flood waste disposal

PORT CARLING, ON- The Township of Muskoka Lakes has fixed the roads.

That’s the word from the municipality’s latest announcement about their flood damage repair efforts. According to the release, issued on Thursday afternoon, the township has raised and repairs all the impacted roads from the recent flood to ensure conditions remain safe.

“I can’t thank our staff enough for their hard work over the past month,” said Ken Becking, Director of Public Works, in the news release.

“The township would like to sincerely thank all those affected for their patience while those road repairs were completed.”

Residents are being reminded that the Bala Falls Bridge is still closed to pedestrians and vehicle traffic until further notice. An engineer will be examining the crossing before anyone is allowed to use it.

Public works staff will be focusing on their annual spring work, which includes the installation of public docks and the prepping of township parks, as well as road maintenance for the summer.

“The township is encouraging residents and contractors to help collect floating debris in the water,” read the announcement.

“All debris can be dropped off at the closest municipal ramp. Township officials ask that debris be placed to avoid blocking boat ramps from use. Please notify the township of any debris left at these sites for pick up.”

Sandbag drop off depots are available at the Orchard Yard (3951 Muskoka Road 169), Patterson Yard (1078 Raymond Road) and Ranwood Yard (1158 Ranwood Road) during the recovery phase.

Property owners in the township will also be getting one waste voucher per property to provide no-charge disposal of flood-damaged material from the designated areas at the Eveleigh Road Transfer Station and Rosewarne Transfer Station during operating hours.

The voucher is valid to dispose of up to one half-ton and single-axle trailer load (or equivalent) of flood-related debris, according to the township announcement.

Residents can contact the Township Office at 705-765-315 or [email protected] for full program details or for providing authorization for voucher pick up to an agent. Documented proof will be required.

The province has also expanded the activation area for disaster recovery funding, in order to provide assistance to eligible applicants affected by the flooding.

“The disaster assistance program applies to a primary residence and its basic contents, or to a small business, or not-for-profit organization,” read the township announcement.

“It provides assistance for emergency expenses and the costs to repair or replace essential property following a natural disaster that are not covered by insurance. To find out if you are eligible for assistance, if you are in the activation area and for next steps, individuals, small businesses, farms and not-for-profit organizations should review guidelines available at ontario.ca/DisasterAssistance, or call 1-844-780-8925 after speaking with their private insurance provider.”

Presentations on the funding will be held at the following locations and times.
