Bracebridge mayor says rain will extend flood

Some areas are closing in on the end, but Bracebridge isn’t there yet.

That’s the sentiment from Mayor Graydon Smith today as he provided another update on the flooding. The Springdale area is reporting shrinking water levels but there is still an incredible amount at the mouth of the Muskoka River which has fully surrounded some homes.

Smith says the flooding is going to be extended another few days for all areas, thanks to rain that’s headed our way. The forecast is calling for between 25 and 35mm to fall on Wednesday, a forecast Smith said he hoped was overestimating.

The mayor also addressed the rumour that the town’s water supply has been compromised. Smith this is absolutely not the case. However, the health unit says people who are on wells should not be drinking that water.

Dozens of more Canadian Armed Forces reservists have arrived in town to help with flood relief as well. Smith said so far 45,000 sandbags have been handed out with another 100,000 arriving today.

The mayor is also asking people to stop trying to tour flood zones and let emergency crews do their work.
