Large drug bust has connections to Muskoka

A lengthy joint forces multi-jurisdictional investigation designed to disrupt the flow of illicit drugs into the community that was conducted by the Barrie Police Service, the Ontario Provincial Police and assisted by the Toronto Police Service Asian Organized Crime Task Force concluded last week with the execution of 10 search warrants and the arrest of eight people.

The investigation focused on the trafficking of cocaine and heroin that was taking place between the Greater Toronto Area and Simcoe County. Local distribution then occurred utilizing identified dealers who operated in communities throughout Simcoe County and the District of Muskoka.

The collaborative and collective effort that commenced in December of last year was undertaken by the Barrie Police Intelligence Unit, Street Crime – Drug Enforcement Unit, Asset Forfeiture Unit along with the OPP Community Street Crime Unit resulted in 30 criminal charges being laid. During the investigation and as a result of the search warrants executed police seized drugs, currency and two motor vehicles with a combined value in excess of $230,000.00.

The suspects arrested face a total of 23 Controlled Drugs and Substances Act charges and seven Criminal Code charges and live in Toronto, Barrie and Springwater Township.

“Illegal drugs and the activities that surround their distribution are not acceptable and have no place in any community. This is an excellent example of borderless policing and I commend all those involved in this incredible initiative that focused on the safety of our community and those that surround and extend beyond Barrie” says Inspector Peter Dewsnap of the Barrie Police Investigative Services.

The investigation remains ongoing.
