Miller happy moose hunt review happening

Addressing the moose draw system and managing moose populations are major concerns for hunters.

That is according to comments from Parry Sound Muskoka MPP Norm Miller.

“I have heard many concerns about both the moose tag draw system and the sustainability of the moose population,” said Miller. “I am pleased that Natural Resources and Forestry Minister John Yakabuski is going to review the whole system.”

Last fall the government announced it would be reviewing moose management in Ontario.  Earlier this week Yakabuski revealed next steps.

“We have heard from hunters that the current approach, specifically the moose tag draw system, is not working for hunters or ensuring sustainability,” said Yakabuski. “We’re acting on those concerns and delivering on our promise to make life easier for Ontario’s hunters while ensuring sustainable populations and continued hunting opportunities.”

Miller agrees the system needs to be reviewed. He adds that hunting is a big economic driver.

“It is a way of life in many rural and remote communities like Parry Sound-Muskoka,” said Miller. “It is important we continue to support an industry that creates jobs that many Ontarians depend on.”

The Committee will be hosting six listening sessions open to the public, including one in North Bay on May 23, 2019. For more information on this and other listening sessions in the province, visit ontario.ca/moose.

Yakabuski outlined some of the key areas for potential overhaul.

“Over the next two years, our goal is to make moose hunting fairer, more accessible and simpler for hunters. Work is already underway to make immediate improvements to online resources so that we can better communicate with hunters,” said Yakabuski. “As the review unfolds, we will continue to listen and engage hunters and stakeholders to help us improve how tag quotas are developed and distributed.”
