Local food bank confirms increase in residents needing their services

The Food Bank of Canada has released the HungerCount 2014 report and the numbers have increased. Stats show a one per cent increase in food bank use since last year, but a 25 per cent jump since the recession in 2008. This increase doesn’t surprise Heather Berg, who is the CEO for the Huntsville Table Soup Kitchen Foundation. She says The Table is seeing new people coming in.

Berg also says stats of people using their food bank jumped from 2012 to 2013.
That number increased from 9.6 per cent in 2012.

Meantime, the Huntsville Salvation Army has seen a five per cent increase from last year to this year. Family Service Worker Sharron Harwood says some of them are people who have jobs.

Hardwood says these working poor have it hard as well and it seems they sometimes fall through the cracks and are forgotten simply because they have jobs.

With more residents needing help to feed their families Berg says it’s our duty to donate to your local food bank.

In March of this year, over 840-thousand people across Canada needed help from a food bank, more than one third of them were children.
