Snowmobiler dies on Hassard Lake near Kearney

A southern Ontario man has died on Hassard Lake after the snowmobile he was riding went into the water.

Almaguin Highlands Ontario Provincial Police and Parry Sound Emergency Medical Services joined Kearney Fire and Emergency Services responding to the incident around noon on Hassard Lake.

42-year-old Shawn McAllister of Zorra Township was riding his snowmobile on the lake near an area with open water when he fell in.

McAllister was eventually brought out of the lake but was unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are reminding snowmobilers at this time of year to check ice conditions prior to travelling on lakes and rivers.

Zorra Township is a small community west of Woodstock, Ontario.
