Pre-election federal budget tabled today; Ontario students to protest post-secondary cuts

Budget tabled amid SNC-Lavalin furor

The Trudeau Liberals will try to change the channel today from the SNC-Lavalin affair with its pre-election budget.  Universal pharmacare, jobs and skills retraining and affordable housing are expected to be unpacked in the fiscal plan this afternoon.  The Opposition parties have said they will do everything they can to hold the Liberals to account for the scandal. The federal election is in October.

Post-secondary students to protest Ford government cuts

Students at 13 of Ontario’s colleges and universities will walk out of class tomorrow.  They’ll be protesting the provinces cuts to post-secondary funding.  The Canadian Federation of Students wants the provincial government to reverse its decision to end free tuition for low income students and offer more grants rather than loans.

More people arrested in the Netherlands

Three people are now in custody in the Netherlands.  They have all been arrested on suspicion of being involved in yesterday’s shooting on a tram that killed three people and injured five others.  Police have not yet ruled out terrorism as the motive but says the investigation continues.

Joint sales reaching new heights

It seems a little high.  StatsCan says enough recreational dried cannabis was sold from October to New Year’s Eve to fill more than 31-million joints.  That does not include medical cannabis. That number is expected to grow as the first 25 brick and mortar pot stores open in April.
