The Neighbourhood Pharmacy Association of Canada has launched their Healthcare Closer to Home national initiative. Communications Director Allen Austin says it’s about highlighting for Canadians and policy makers the services that are available to local pharmacies.

Austin says pharmacies will help patients get treated quicker and closer to home. It will also lower costs for the overall healthcare system. Something Parry Sound-Muskoka MPP Norm Miller supports. Miller says giving pharmacists more opportunities could save the province money.

The Neighbourhood Pharmacy Association of Canada launched the Healthcare Closer to Home initiative. The organization says it’s the first step to leveraging the accessibility of pharmacists to deliver minor treatments and counselling patients need in their communities.
Bill Coon is the owner and pharmacist at Muskoka Medial Pharmacy in Huntsville. He says he’s excited about where the profession is going. He says pharmacists are the caretakers of a patient’s prescription profile.

Along with being able to provide the flu vaccine, pharmacists can now offer meds checks and extend current prescriptions. Coon says it’s important to develop relationships with your pharmacist because there is so much they can do to help you with lifestyle and medication choices.
